What Are Signs of a Rodent or Pest Infestation?

When it comes to pests, often by the time visible signs appear, the problem has often already been developing for weeks - or even months. Many pests are nocturnal, instinctively avoid human activity, and thrive in the hidden areas of your home.

  • Droppings and urine odors. Sightings of rodent droppings along baseboards, inside cabinets, in pantry areas, or near entry points.
  • Gnaw marks and chewed materials. Mice and rats chew constantly - look for gnaw marks on food packaging, electrical wiring, insulation, wood trim, etc.
  • Scratching or scurrying sounds. You're hearing movement, scratching, or scurrying sounds coming from inside walls, ceilings, or beneath floors.
  • Mud tubes along your foundation. Thin, pencil-width mud tubes running vertically along your foundation walls or crawl space.
  • Nesting materials in hidden areas. Shredded paper, insulation, fabric, or other soft materials gathered in hidden corners or inside storage areas.
  • Unexplained damage to wood or structural surfaces. Hollow-sounding wood, soft or blistering paint, sagging floors, visibly damaged structural wood, etc.

Pest Control FAQs

What type of damage do termites cause?

Termites are one of the most destructive (and silent) forces a home can face. Termites feed on cellulose, which is found in the wood, insulation, and structural framing that make up the bones of your home. Over time, they hollow out load-bearing beams, floor joists, wall studs, and support posts from the inside out - compromising the structural integrity of your home in ways that can be extremely costly to repair. Beyond this, termites can damage drywall, flooring, cabinets, and even books and paper materials stored in affected areas.

What types of damage do rodents cause?

Mice and rats are compulsive chewers - they gnaw through electrical wiring, creating a genuine fire hazard that is responsible for thousands of house fires every year. They also chew through insulation, PVC plumbing pipes, drywall, and structural wood, causing damage that can be expensive to locate and repair. Beyond physical destruction, rodents contaminate food supplies, leave behind droppings and urine that carry dangerous pathogens and bacteria, and introduce fleas, mites, and ticks into your home as secondary pests.

Are the products used in pest control safe for my family and pets?

Bird Dog Specialty Contracting uses professional-grade products that are applied by licensed pest control professionals who are trained in proper application techniques, dosing, and safety protocols. When applied correctly and allowed to dry fully, the products used in perimeter barrier treatments pose no meaningful risk to people or pets going about their normal daily activities. We will always communicate clearly about any specific precautions needed.

What is a perimeter barrier treatment and how does it work?

A perimeter barrier treatment is an applied pesticide treatment around the exterior of your home that creates a protective buffer zone against invading insects and pests. The treatment is applied along the foundation, around entry points, across window and door frames, and throughout other vulnerable areas where insects are likely to attempt entry. When pests come into contact with the treated barrier, it eliminates them before they have the opportunity to make their way inside.
